Caravan ‘group’
shares workload
DDMC CAMPING and Caravanners,
hard on the heels of changing their name
from “section” to “group,” have decided
on a new structure to spread the hard
work of organizing rallies and developing
activities.
“Our camping and caravan rallies
are renowned as friendly events and
we want to do everything possible to
ensure a proper welcome and maximize
the involvement of everyone attending.”
said Janet Scammell, Group Treasurer.
At the AGM, held during the Forest
of Dean rally in September and attended
by DDMC Chief Executive Ed Passant,
it was decided to split the work involved
in the previous role of “Section coordinator.”
Volunteer marshals would
be appointed for each rally and a new
post of “Group Representative”, responsible
for external liaison, is to be created.
The Group Representative will be
elected by a ballot of all Caravan and
Camping Group members later this year.
Janet Scammell and Heather Watts
were unanimously elected as Treasurer
and Secretary respectively.
Provisional Rally dates for next year
are as follows:
Stowford Meadows, Devon: 8-22 May
Holme Pierrepoint, Notts: 3–19 July
Banham Zoo, Norfolk: 4-8 September.
Death of a friend
THE FORMER Labour MP and Vice
President of the DDMC, Lewis Carter-
Jones, has died aged 83.
The son of a miner, Lewis was born in
Gilfach Goch in the Rhonda Valley and
entered Parliament in the Wilson government
in 1964. He rapidly became a passionate
advocate of the rights of disabled
people, memorably describing councils
that refused to build access ramps as creating “imprisonment without trial”.
He chaired the committee for research
into apparatus for disabled people from
1973-80, and even after retiring from
Parliament in 1987 he remained active
on a variety of issues affecting disabled
people. He received a CBE in 1995.
Lewis was a staunch friend of the
DDMC, most recently being a strong
advocate of our “The Three Point Turn
Project,” supported by the Big Lottery
Fund. Our sincere sympathy goes to his
widow, Pat.
