Lighting up

WHETHER YOU are a disabled driver or a carer of a disabled person, this novel lighting system for vehicles may help in many ways. The Vagole Safety Lighting System provides bright light all around the vehicle for easier and safer access as
well as being useful in breakdowns.
Designed to work automatically and seamlessly with the vehicle's electrical system (such as when reversing), Vagole allows the driver to concentrate on the task in hand with the benefit of all-round visibility.
The Vagole system offers extra security when approaching the vehicle in unfamiliar areas or for lone travellers. If your car breaks down, the extra lighting means that you are easily visible both to other vehicles and the recovery services. Also, additional lighting can make tasks such as reversing easier.
The lights automatically supply illumination to designated areas surrounding the vehicle. and can be angled to your specification within several combinations. The system can be fitted to 95 per cent of all vehicles (ground clearance of 16.5 cm
required).
Fitting does not require any cutting of electrical wires or drilling into vehicle sub-frames, so is a reasonably straightforward procedure for a suitably qualified garage or individual.
The Vagole system complies with European legislation, is CE approved and has a two-year warranty period. It will retail at £179.99 (including VAT) + postage and packaging, however, any registered disabled person will be eligible to purchase Vagole for £155.00 (incl. VAT) + postage and packaging for a limited period, until the end of March 2005.

Screen success

A REVOLUTIONARY shower screen that promises to make showering easier for wheelchair users and their carers has won a major innovation award.
The brainchild of Huddersfield entrepreneur Kevin Barker, the K-Screen is mounted to a fixed wall bracket and is is made of a flexible fabric that is pulled across the wet floor area at waist height of the carer. When not in use the screen retracts
into a wall-mounted cassette, taking up minimal space within the bathroom.
Having won the Disability North Innovative Design Award, first-time inventor Kevin is now aiming to target the 128 local authorities and nearly one million UK wheelchair users with
his invention.

Move freely with Hip Grip

A DEVICE that provides increased reach and movement for certain wheelchair users has been recognized at the Independent Living Design Awards. The Bodypoint Hip Grip, a pelvic stabilisation device from the US, allows a person to move their pelvis forward in the wheelchair and then back into a neutral posture without having to work hard constantly to maintain their position.
In the UK, trials of the Hip Grip have been undertaken on people with cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis, but plans are afoot to increase the scope of the trials to include people with
spinal injuries.
The product is available from BES Rehab: 0845 1300 237.
